First School in Mwimbi built at Kanyue

1916

The First Station for Dr Arthurs team of Kikuyu evangelists was built at Chief Gaitungi's place in Mwiria in April 1915. In March 1916, the station was moved to Kanyue. The Assistant DC Orde-Browne (Later Knighted to Sir Granville St. John Orde-Browne) provided the team with porters and guides to the new site. A hut was built with help from Chief Gaitungi whom Arthur had met in 1913. Men and women were mobilised to cut poles and roofing grass for the new hut at Kanyue. The hut served as a church and school for the Mwimbi people. Daudi Makumi and Wilson Waweru used the Bible and other religious literature to teach Christianity. A book nicknamed "nondo" (so nicknamed because its covers resembled red ochre) was the major text for secular education.
